Using Words To Heal

Using Words To HealChronic illness is becoming a common problem across the nation. The number of people reporting that they feel sick all the time is on the rise, and there doesn’t seem to be a clear underlining cause. But regardless of the illness and what the cause may be, there is a treatment that has no negative side effects, costs no money and is available to anyone who wants to give it a try.

I remember reading one of Dr. Andrew Weil’s books (I apologize I don’t remember which one it was) where he did a study of cancer survivors to determine if there was a common link to their recovery. He found that there was a common link, but not exactly what he expected to find. In all the cases he studied he found of those who got better, those individuals had made the decision and were convinced that they would get better.

That research dovetails with another theoretical idea that is starting to enter the general consciousness. That idea is that words and thought govern our reality. There is a growing movement in which people are seriously trying to use words to heal their bodies and rid themselves of their chronic illness.

It’s a fairly simple concept; the idea is to start telling yourself that you feel good. Consider the following example:

Perhaps you wake up with a cold and flu, someone at work asks how you are feeling. How do you respond? Most would respond that they feel terrible. But using words to heal would suggest saying that you’re stating to feel better.

If you suffer from a chronic illness trying using words to heal. Tell yourself that you are getting better. Tell yourself that you can feel your body healing. Say the words out loud, and repeat them to yourself through the day.

The idea is if you tell yourself that you feel sick, you will feel sick. If you tell yourself you feel good, you will feel good.

There is a power to language that we don’t fully understand. Using words to heal is a fringe concept with little to no scientific data to back it up, but with nothing to lose, why not give it a try. Think yourself healthy, and be healthy.
