Uterine Fibroids A Common Problem For Women

Uterine Fibroids A Common Problem For WomenUterine fibroids are abnormal muscle cells that form as nonmalignant growths on both the interior and exterior of the uterus. It is a problem that affects an estimated 30 percent of women, although that figure may be higher considering many women who have fibroid tumors never know it unless the happen to be discovered in a routine pelvic exam.

Most fibroids seem to form sometime when a woman is in her late thirties and early forties. The fibroids then shrink during menopause. It is believed that estrogen is involved in the formation of fibroids but there is no direct evidence to prove that.

In some cases, fibroids cause no symptoms at all whereas in other cases, fibroids can be responsible for in the extreme case infertility, or for heavy and frequent menstrual periods. Other symptoms include weakness, painful sexual intercourse, bleeding between periods and anemia. In addition, fibroids have been known to cause pain.

Although surgery is always an option to remove the fibroids, now the general practice is to leave the fibroids unless they are causing a medical problem for the woman.

If you have a fibroid consider the following supplement to help ease the symptoms and to hopefully prevent the need for surgery:

• Iron. Women who experience heavy bleeding are almost always deficient in Iron. Choose an Iron supplement that is easily absorbed by the body to help replenish what gets lost due to heavy menstrual cycles.

• Multivitamin: It’s a good idea for everyone to take a multivitamin but particularly so if you experience symptoms caused by fibroids. A multivitamin will help ensure that you’re getting the balanced amount of vitamins and minerals needed to maintain good health.

• Vitamin A & C. Both A & C are essential to support proper immune function. You may also want to consider taking a zinc supplement to support your immune system, only limit your zinc intake to about 100 mg per day.

If you suffer from the symptoms described above you should contact your doctor for a complete examination. If fibroids are discovered, you should stop taking any medication with high estrogen content, including oral birth control pills. Accelerated estrogen levels may encourage fibroid growth.
