Skaggs Reflects On His Change To Bluegrass
Ricky Skaggs spent the 1980s high atop the country charts. He's one of "Billboard's" Top 20 Artists of the Decade, having scored 24 Top 20 hits and 12 number ones. Skaggs also racked up a slew of awards, including six Grammys and eight CMA's, including the coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy in 1985. That begs the question of why he walked away from a successful country career in the early '90s to return to his bluegrass roots.
Country's new direction, combined with the 1996 death of Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe made Skaggs decide to take his music in a different direction. That decision has paid off for Skaggs. He's got his own "Skaggs Family Records" label and is nominated for four International Bluegrass Music Association Awards. That ceremony takes place tonight in Nashville. |
