Quin Cries Over Prop. 8
Tegan & Sara's Sara Quin is taking part in a Spinner.com blog series in which she and her sister are blogging on particular emotions. This week, Sara is using the starting emotion of "cry" to share her feelings on the recent passing of Proposition 8 in California, which overturned the rights to same-sex marriage. Quin, a Canadian citizen, has the rights to marry but says she still feels the stinging intolerance on a regular basis. The vocalist says she recently attended a traditional wedding and was moved to tears. She also remembers as a child looking at her parents' wedding photos and wondering one day if she would have children staring at photos of her on her wedding day. She explains, quote, "The ceremony, what it means, burned into my mind, my heart. I want the right to choose that ceremony for my life. To celebrate my relationship and my commitment. As of 2005, I, as a Canadian, can marry. It is truly sad for me to think that there are millions of people like me, who cannot access these rights, these customs." Quin says that gay marriage is not what's at stake, it's the right to choose to marry, the right to benefits, the right to adopt, and the right to access the same set of rights extended to every citizen in the United States Of America.
