"SOS: Saving OurSelves" Brings Together Blige, Bieber, Clinton
Wyclef Jean opened up BET's "SOS: Saving OurSelves" telethon Friday night with a performance of his latest tune, "Hold On," featuring Mavado. The night's performances were uplifting and paid tribute to the Haitian people at Miami's American Airlines Arena. 'Clef started off the theme by bringing Haitian MCs onstage to rap with him on "Hold On." Singers Jazmine Sullivan and Mary J. Blige belted out "We Gonna Make It," to keep things on a positive tip. Keeping with the uplifting vibe was Robin Thicke, who covered Mavin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me." Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber sang bits of his hit song "One Less Lonely Girl" in French to honor Haiti. He also performed "Baby" with rapper Ludacris. Busta Rhymes busted out with a Haiti-themed rap with lyrics like, quote, "It's so incredible to witness the strength of the righteous, and the clearest example of how we come together in crisis." Other performers included Chris Brown, who sang his hits, "Crawl" and "With You." Sullivan joined up with Chrisette Michele to sing Haiti relief tune, "Are You Listening," that mixed in a bit of "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands." Monica, Pitbull, Brian McKnight, Gloria Estefan, and Sean Kingston also performed during the telethon. Former President Bill Clinton was a surprise guest. Clinton told the crowd, quote, "We've still got a lot to do to get the people of Haiti back so they don't have to worry about day-to-day." Host Queen Latifah along with rappers Diddy and Pharrell ended the night by leading a sing-along of "Lean On Me."
