Jack White Adds To Resume With His Own Label
Jack White is taking pride in his Third Man Records label. The rocker has seen early success from the company, as he tries to create a niche that will help separate his business from other label ventures. White tells BBC's 6Music, quote, "We have a venue at the headquarters too, and we have an 8-track recording machine next to the stage so we can record straight to analog in front of a crowd and release it on vinyl weeks later. I don't think there's any other place in the world where you can do that, so that's very unique and we want to do that more and more, maybe one live session a month with a live album. So over the next few years, just a plethora of live acts coming through there." Conan O'Brien recently recorded a live album at Third Man's Nashville headquarters and will release it through the label.
In addition to the live albums, White says he's loved producing seven-inch discs for other acts and loves the one-or-two-song 45-format. When asked about starting a label amidst such an economic downturn in the music business, White says he's learned to specialize. He explains, quote, "You just have to cater to the people that really cherish it, and that's what we do. We start with the vinyl record and then we put the digital out afterwards. That's almost like an afterthought, a portable version of the real thing. We never consider that the real thing." |
