Arcade Fire Credits U2's Bono For Song Lyric
Arcade Fire fans are ready to comb over the band's lyrics to see what they can uncover. The line that goes, quote, "You never trust a millionaire quoting the Sermon on the Mount," has some wondering about the muse. Singer Win Butler says that while some may think it's about U2 frontman Bono, it's not in a negative way. He tells NME.com that he actually gives the often-campaigning vocalist credit for his work, especially during the Bush era. He says, quote, "As much as people slag Bono, I will forever give him credit for engaging with George W. Bush when he was president...Even though it was a deeply unpopular move, even in his own band. The HIV medications in Africa, every aspect of the US foreign policy -- it was a hell of a lot more than any president before had done." Butler adds that Bono was engaged in the work even though the situation wasn't ideal. He says that even though that's not his path, he would never fault someone for "trying to be engaged in the world." The singer reveals that the line was actually a quote from "1984" author George Orwell and meant as a generalization about "hipster political posturing."
