Dick Clark Shares Memories Of "New Year's Rockin' Eve"
While "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" is officially celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Dick Clark says the show's roots date back much further. He tells "USA Today" the special "probably began on December 31st, 1959" with a special New Year's Eve edition of "American Bandstand." Clark recalls the "actual first formal telecast" was on December 31st, 1972, with host Three Dog Night and performances from Helen Reddy, Al Green, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. He explains that with "New Year's Rockin' Eve" he was looking to provide an alternative to the annual Guy Lombardo New Year's Eve special, and offer something that would interest younger viewers. Clark still enjoys "New Year's Rockin' Eve," saying it's "fun to join in this festive occasion and become a part of such a massive event." He adds that while he's been participating in a more limited capacity since suffering a stroke in 2004, he plans to make appearances each year for as long as he can. He admits he wishes it was "as easy as it used to be," but says he's "encouraged by the many people" who tell him he's "an inspiration to them." Looking back over the past 40 years of "New Year's Rockin' Eve," Clark says it's hard to pick a favorite moment. But he notes that "one of the most memorable has been Barry Manilow, who has performed his song 'It's Just Another New Year's Eve' several times." This year's celebration begins on ABC with the two-hour "New Year's Rockin' Eve: The 40th Anniversary Party," airing at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Immediately following that is the hour-long "Dick Clark's Primetime New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012." "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012, Part 1" gets under way at 11:30 p.m. Eastern, which leads into "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012, Part 2." The special will originate from both New York and Los Angeles, featuring performances from Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Blink-182, The Band Perry, and others.
